Mr. M C Thomas works as Managing Director of Tata Steel Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Steel focused on commercial mining and Ferro Alloys business leading the full mining value chain from Chrome ore Manufacturing of Ferro Alloys and handling Global Customers for Chrome Alloys.
He joined Tata Steel as a Graduate Trainee in 1992. He worked in various roles in Mines division till he became Chief (Noamundi) in February 2005. He also was associated with special projects like Total Operational Performance (TOP) with McKinsey, Developing IT strategy for Tata Steel with Gartner, Leading an Iron ore task force to evaluate commercial opportunities in Iron ore etc during this stint.
In 2007, post acquisition of Corus by Tata Steel, he was assigned to lead the Global Minerals Resources team formed to explore globally possible raw materials linkage for Corus.
Mr. Thomas had a 5-year stint in Ivory Coast, West Africa since 2008, as the Managing Director for of Tata Steel Cote d’lvoire SA, a JV of Tata Steel with State Mining company. He worked to develop Mt Gao Iron ore project from start, involving acquiring the lease, detailed exploration, resource & mine planning and a feasibility study up to port for a possible 24 mtpa project. He also worked as EIC (Western Africa) for exploring other mineral projects in Western and central African regions especially in Guinea, Liberia, Gabon and Ghana for Tata Steel.
He returned to Tata Steel in June 2013 as General Manager (Operations), FAMD and then moved to lead Iron ore operations of as General Manager (OMQ). He also worked as General Manager, Raw Materials Strategy Group before being transferred as EIC (FAM) in June 2017 till May 20.
He is passionate about adventure sports like Off-roading, trekking, river rafting etc and serving the community spending time for useful projects. He is also an Erikson International certified coach.
